Arts Without Borders is pleased to announce: the Art Night on December 18th 2015 at Chelsea’s renowned Agora Gallery, SINAMERICA I: ACCULTURATION, INCULTURATION, TRANSCULTURATION：”Chinese Art in U.S. Across Generations” is a huge success!
This Art Night is entitled to demonstrate the diversity of cultural interaction from several micro-generation gaps from the beginning of the Reopening of China in the 80s to the present post-industrial digital world. The subtitle addressed the three phases of said culture interaction: the Acculturation, in which one adapts to an alien culture; the Inculturation, the disguise of one’s original culture as part of the foreign culture; the Transculturation, in which two cultures mix and breed something new.
The Art Scene of New York-Based Chinese artists of the young-generation is one of the m
ost vibrant and quickly evolving contemporary art world. Born between 1982 and 1985, the six artists this Art Night presented defied stereotypical image of Chinese art by offering highly individual responses to art historical traditions as well as global cultural fusion.

The Set-up starts with the work of the youngest of the six, Jinyu’s Three-Character Classic and ends with her Self-Portrait: Unconscious, emphasizing the energy and youth in the emerging China power in NY culture. Also, her mini-device installations What Are You Looking at? Is installed on the corners of the exhibition space and in the lady’s room (!), putting guests in an immersive experience of rethinking the meaning of “surveillance”, if any.
Occupying the two walls are the inkjet masterpieces of “De Shanshui” from Chen Baoyang. This series aims at eliminating the internal circle of traditional culture to unite traditions and modernity, by revising the composition of Shanshui paiting through the “contemporary mirror” of digitalization. This corresponds perfectly to the process of cultural interaction and counts for the direct interpretation of this Art Night’s spirit.

Zheng Minglu’s Chinese Zodiac and Wu Yanping’s In the Forest appeared on the neighboring walls. Chinese Zodiac approaches the balance point of skeletal structure through the exploration of irregular architectural sequence in transforming the twelve animals. Sharing similar values, In the Forest is also keen on the myth of the inconceivable, while implementing the traditional art of paper cutting. In the folkloric and fairy-tale settings, Wu Yanping intends to reveal the complex humanity through her subconscious scissors.
Cheng Yinan, China in Recent 100 Years, 2007, 2015 revision
Cheng Yinan’s China in Recent 100 Years and Cai Chengliang’s Six Dreams about A City are the two video art pieces on set. China in Recent 100 Years is an image poem of China’s historical progress in the past century using metaphorical personalization. The characters in the film are symbols of the time fantasy while the symbols themselves are at constant change. Cai Chengliang’s Six Dreams about A City also employs seemingly ambiguous metaphors and symbols to address the tension between “reality and dream”, “stranger and city”, “object and self”, thus creating an elusive bond with Cheng’s visual language.

ABOUT ARTS WITHOUT BORDERS
Arts Without Borders is the sole brainchild of Xiaoyun Zhang. In 2008, as curating assistant of the late Korean Curator Won-il Rhee, she was engaged in a two-year experience preparing for Nanjing Biennale, during which time she was greatly influenced by Won-il Rhee’s knowledge, professionalism and devotion to art. This became the founding momentum of Arts Without Borders.
Arts Without Borders is a not-for profit organization in pursuit of “borderlessness” in the presentation of art, promotion of culture as well as the selection of team members. Arts Without Borders aims to transcend all limits of art, because we believe art is for all.
