Zapkus is fascinated with the connection between painting and classical music composition. His painting process has similarities to a composer’s musical architecture, where the symphony in its thousand measures and orchestrations exists as a fixed, stretched out equilibrium.
The centerpiece of the show, Piazzolla in Traffic (Featured above) references Ástor Piazzolla, a radical Argentine composer, and Zapkus’s acclaimed painting Traffic from 1975. Piazzolla’s compositions are positioned between classical and secular pop aesthetics; Zapkus’s work is similarly radical and innovative. Traffic in particular consists of a quartet of four abrasively oblique panels, which attempts to find resolution into classical aesthetic balance. Piazzolla in Traffic is likewise constructed of small units making a whole as a sum of the parts. The experience is an inclusive summation of these particular references, discordant yet co-dependent. The work is an ambitious summary of Zapkus’s painterly evolution.
