Before I go to bed, I usually set my alarm clock for 5:25am in the hope that I will get up and be ready to give food offerings to a Buddhist monk. However, when my lousy alarm clock sets off with its old classic ring tone, I never hesitate to slam it right away. Then I tell myself that I will get up in the next five minutes, but quite often I go back to sleep. As soon as I open my eyes again, I know I am already late.

Using photography as my primary medium, I have long been interested in creating fictionalized landscapes inhabited by a cast of invented characters. Throughout my work, is an interest in American mythos, humor, narrative clichés, and cinematic traditions that become restaged in unexpected ways.

As an artist I am drawn to the beauty of erosion: the physical deterioration and wearing away of forms over time through the action of nature’s hand. I mimic this beauty of erosion in my paintings, which are made up of as many as forty layers of pigment that I reveal by sanding, scraping, and bruising the painting’s surface in a manner that simulates both decay and the passage of time.

Justin Mortimer (born 1970) is a British painter, most known for his paintings of well known celebrities including Harold Pinter, Sir Steve Redgrave and Queen Elizabeth II. He won the National Gallery’s BP Portrait Award in 1991.

My recent works reflect my research into current trends, advancements and understandings of physics, nanotechnology, neurology and other contemporary sciences. My practice gleans influence from the theory of an evolutionary Singularity, work being done at CERN with the Large Hadron Collider, and the “overall exponential nature of progress.” I am inspired by both the genius and the crackpot, the elegance of the universe and Tron. I gather charts, photographs, theories and proofs from various industry and mass media sources and events. This collected data serves as a starting point for my works which act as visual solutions to my own curiosities and meditations on these themes.

Nicholas Bakita, a recent graduate from SVA’s master of fine arts program, paints often sparse abstract images of the world that surrounds us all.

Andrew Brischler lives and works in New York, NY. A recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts MFA program, his work examines the youthful foolishness of his generation’s view of abstraction. His intentionally ill-conceived canvases explore a sense of futile beauty through a mix of hard-edged geometry, sublime color gradients, and the petulant scrawls of a teenage boy in a notebook’s margins. Elements of popular culture and pop music, the histories of minimalism, abstract expressionism, and arte povera are sampled and mashed up into paintings that challenge this art history as much as embrace it.
