Max Bill is an important personage for Jaime Gili, because of the contradictions and fissures that he imagines in the rigid structures that the Swiss used in his multifaceted practice. In an accessible pictorial dialogue, at various levels, the new paintings of Gili start from the omnipresent reticle of Bill to determine a contemporary path of liberation for that late modernity that Bill represents. Maybe making the same penetrate a tropical forest full of crime and ornament.
Jaime Gili (Caracas 1972) lives and works in London. His work has been contextualized as continuing a tradition of Latin American abstract art, especially the Venezuelan optical artists from the 20th Century. Critics have described his work as “a mix of Pop, Minimalism, Vorticism, Futurism and graffiti Art” and as “a bomb exploding on a Cruz Diez”. Gili received his MA in painting from the Royal College of Art (London) in 1998, after studying in Caracas and Barcelona, and has exhibited widely since then: in the UK, USA, Brazil, Switzerland, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela. He won the international contest for one of the world’s largest public art projects, 25,000 square meters on 16 large industrial storage tanks in South Portland, Maine. Since then, he has been invited to several projects for art integrated in the architecture including Bloomberg Space in London, Tynemouth Train Station near Newcastle, Barrio José Félix Ribas in Petare, Caracas, and in the city of London. More recently he has been invited to create both permanent temporary installations in public places, continuing, in some cases, and questioning, in others, the modern tradition integrating art in architecture.
